Renewing your car insurance in Ethiopia typically involves completing three main steps: updating your third-party liability cover via the federal digital system, optionally renewing your comprehensive (first-party) insurance with your provider, and completing your annual technical inspection to get your road permit sticker.
Step 1: Secure Mandatory Third-Party Insurance By Ethiopian law, all vehicles must have valid Third-Party Insurance to cover third-party injuries and emergency medical treatments.
How to Renew: This process is centralized through the Third Party Insurance Management System (managed in partnership with Ethio telecom).
Details needed: You will need to provide your mobile number, vehicle registration details, and the mobile payment (such as Telebirr) to finalize this step.
Step 2: Renew Comprehensive Insurance (Optional but Recommended)
If your vehicle requires full or comprehensive coverage against theft, fire, and collision, you must approach your specific insurance provider (e.g., Ethiopian Insurance Corporation, Nib Insurance, or Awash Insurance) before your current policy expires.
Documents to bring: Your expired insurance policy document, vehicle registration/ownership book (Libre), and the newly renewed Third-Party Insurance receipt.
Procedure: Contact your insurance agent or visit the branch directly to process the paperwork.
Once you pay the premium, you will receive a new cover note/risk note and official receipt.
Step 3: Vehicle Annual License and Technical Inspection In Ethiopia, you cannot officially renew your vehicle permit and license without proof of valid insurance.
Procedure: After securing your insurance documents, take your vehicle to an authorized technical inspection center.
Documents to bring: Your renewed insurance certificates, vehicle ownership book, and the previous year's vehicle inspection sheet.
Completion: Once your vehicle passes the technical inspection and the axle-load/annual renewal fees are paid, the Federal Transport Authority or regional bureau will issue your new road permit sticker.
Quick Tips
Start Early: It is highly recommended to start the renewal process at least two to four weeks before your current policy expires to avoid driving illegally.
Rates: Minimum premium rates for motor insurance are flat rates regulated by the National Bank of Ethiopia.
