Renewing a driving license in Ethiopia requires visiting the Federal Transport Authority or relevant regional bureaus with your current license, a medical certificate, and passport-size photos. Standard licenses are valid for 4 years (or 2 years for drivers aged 55 and older). A renewal fee applies.
Follow these steps to complete the renewal process:
1. Gather Required Documents
Your current/expired driving license
Medical Certificate: Obtain a physical examination and vision/hearing test from an authorized or recognized medical clinic.
Photographs: Bring several recent passport-size photographs.
Application Forms: Purchase and fill out the official driver's license renewal application form at the licensing center.
Identification: Bring your Ethiopian Resident ID card or Passport.
2. Visit the Licensing Authority
Federal Level: Drivers in Addis Ababa can visit the Federal Transport Authority, located on Haile Gebreselassie Street (around the Megenagna area).
Regional Level: If you are outside Addis Ababa, visit your local regional transport bureau.
3. Pay Service Fees
The standard administrative fee for the renewal or replacement of driver's licenses across all categories is typically around (620 Birr). You may also need to pay small additional fees for local stamps or document processing.
4. Important Rules to Note
Renewal Cycle: Permanent licenses are valid for 4 years. For drivers above 55 years of age, the license must be renewed every 2 years.
Penalties: If you fail to renew your license within one year after its expiration date, you will face additional penalties and might be required to retake driving exams.
Online Services: Basic inquiries and business-level transport license renewals can often be processed via the Ethiopian Government Electronic Services portal.
