Visa Extension Process

To extend your visa in Ethiopia, you must visit the Immigration and Citizenship Service (ICS) Head Office (located near Gotera/Mexico Square in Addis Ababa) in person before your current visa expires.

Because the immigration office will retain your passport for a couple of days to process the extension, it is highly recommended to start this process at least 5 to 7 days before your visa expires.

Essential Requirements

When you visit the ICS office, you must bring the following:

Your Physical Passport: Must be valid for at least 6 months.

Passport Copies: A printed copy of your main passport page and your current visa/entry stamp.

Passport-Sized Photos: One or two recent, color passport-sized photographs.

Payment: Fees must be paid in USD cash (local Ethiopian Birr is typically not accepted for visa payments at the office). Extension fees generally cost around ($152) USD for a single-entry extension.

Overstay Penalties

It is critical to avoid overstaying your authorized time without an extension, as it will result in strict penalties:

Fines: Daily overstay fines apply.

Court Summons: You may be required to pay a court fine in Ethiopian Birr before you are permitted to depart the country.

For the most up-to-date fee structures based on your specific visa type, check the official Ethiopian eVisa Extension Page.
